The author obviously knows his stuff. The book is full of useful information, not a lot of fluff. It is difficult to compress the important facts of the PC interface in just over 900 pages – including a strong appendix. The author manages to do a good job, without dumbing down for beginners or making it too high for the rest of us.

However, the book suffers from poor around the language, just that often gets in the way of the message. I have understood that there were some problems with the editorial staff at McGraw-Hill before the book went to press, and perhaps that is why the language difficulties. While one can usually ignore typos, grammar, spelling, and sentence structure in a strictly technical volume, it is difficult to do with this book. Sometimes the English is really difficult to read. If I had been better edited, which would merit five stars, not three.

based solely on the strength of the author’s knowledge and information presented in this book, I like to buy other books by the author.

The PC Doctor is one of the most authoritative and comprehensive books on the available PC Architecture. The book offers good coverage, not just PC hardware, but also contains a survey through the software development environments available across multiple operating systems. I particularly enjoyed the history of the PC section. The evolution of the PC is really interesting. Predka liberal use of hardware and software projects provides a solid set of examples for the reader to learn. I found the book to be valuable resource while developing an ISA interface card and I am sure you will too.

I chose this book for a local chapter, because I was looking for something to help me at work (I PC repair). Wow, this book is thick and has a lot of information about understandin what is happening inside the PC. Included in the CD-ROM are a couple of utilities I’ve used to help me understand what is wrong with the PC and what is and what is not installed.

The history of the PC was really useful and helped me understand what was happening – especially when you get an old ’486.

  4. This book is everything you do not need the PC interface with external devices. Like most books by Myke Predka is full of filler and distorted. It contains lots of interesting information about the computer interface, but no useful information to start your own. I’m very disappointed and feel Predka books he writes to sell books, and not primarily to educate and inform.

I bought this book because I liked mykes “Programming and customizing PICmicro microcontrollers and I was happy to see that is different from the others, like” The Indispensable PC Hardware “book. In mykes

book explains what is happening in the PC and what you can do to take advantage of it. This difference makes the book much more useful.

There are a number of circuits and sample programs you can use the book to help you understand how the PC and give you a start in developing their own applications.

Great book by a great Canadian author.
